Obituary for Mary Jane Stecher

Mary Jane Stecher, 95, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on April 25, 2020.

Mary was born in Springfield, Ohio on November 12, 1924. She came to Mansfield in 1946 and married the love of her life, Peter A. Stecher Jr. and they celebrated 40 wonderful years of marriage together. Mary was an amazing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was such a caring, loving and kind soul. She never knew a stranger. She was always ready to help anyone anyway she could. She will leave a great void in all her family's hearts and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure to ever know her. She loved spending time with her numerous grandchildren and attending their sporting events and music recitals. She was their #1 fan. She attended Living Hope Church on Kentucky Avenue with her daughter Sharon, whom she lived with the past 3 1/2 years.

She was an avid polka fan as Pete played the accordion at numerous polka music festivals. She loved playing bingo, cards and doing her word search puzzles. She and the family also did quite a bit of camping when the girls were young. Mary was employed at the Mansfield Tire & Rubber Company for 27 years retiring in 1973. She then went to work as a driver for Whitey's Auto Mall leaving in 2009.

Mary is survived by 3 daughters: Sharon (Walt) Shifflet of Mansfield, Debra (Steve) Patterson of Mansfield, and Dianna (Fred) Guiler of Butler; 6 grandchildren: Becky (Will) Gordon, Brandon Schisler, Katie Patterson, Brian Patterson, Ashley Willison, Logan (Megan) Willison, 9 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great- grandchildren; 1 sister Anna Mae Crosby; plus numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents JP and Anna Mae Harris; husband Peter A. Stecher Jr. in 1987; 4 half-brothers; 4 half-sisters; 4 brothers: Woodrow, Carl, Eugene and Phil Harris; 2 sisters Marie Harris and Bessie Shenberger. She also had 2 other half-brothers Harry Crumley and Elmer Crumley.

Pastor Phillip Green will officiate a private service at Herlihy-Chambers Funeral home and burial will follow at Oak Grove Memorial Cemetery in Lexington, Ohio.

Ways to express sympathy may be by leaving online condolences on the funeral home's website or by sending memorial contributions to the Richland County Humane Society, 3025 Park Avenue West, Ontario, Ohio 44906 in Mary's name.
